3/2014 Preparation for the First General Women's Meeting

Faith in God for Girls: Learning and Living the Gospel
Read a recent conference address given by the prophet. Decide what you can do to follow the prophet, and do it.

At Our Activity:
Since the first ever General Women's Meeting (information in that link) would include these girls for the first time, we had an activity learning about the women who are leaders in the church.  We "met" and learned about the Primary, Young Women, and Relief Society general presidencies.  We heard things about their lives and what they have taught.  We talked some about the role of women in the church.  We did not completely fulfill the goal above, but included a good introduction to finish it at home.

At Home:
As Mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts, nieces, grand-mothers/daughters, or friends, watch and discuss the General Women's Meeting (link to the recording of the session).  Listen to the words of the Prophet and the women who have an influence in the leadership of the church.  The following week, listen together to the words of the prophet in General Conference and complete the goal above to set a goal of what you can do to follow the prophet, and follow through.

3/2014 Daughters of the Utah Pioneer Museum

Faith in God for Girls: Developing Talents
Make an item from wood, metal, fabric, or other material, or draw, paint, or sculpt a piece of art. Display your finished work for others to see.
Visit an art museum or attend a concert, play, or other cultural event. Share your experience with your family or activity day group.
At Our Activity:
We visited a small local pioneer museum.  A volunteer there shared many pioneer experiences, local history, and other things so we learned about people who lived here many years ago.  The girls were also able to dress up in a long skirt and bonnet to lift the handle of a handcart, played some simple pioneer games the children would have enjoyed, and made small scrap dolls such as children would have had back then.

At Home:
Teach a friend or family member the games we learned.  Share the doll made, or make more using scraps of yarn and fabric. Extend this activity by researching your family to see where your ancestors lived during this time, when the first family member joined the church, when family first moved to the area, etc:

Prepare a pedigree chart with your name and your parents’ and grandparents’       names. Prepare a family group record for your family and share a family story. Discuss how performing temple work blesses families.

2/2014 Fire Station

Faith in God for Girls: Serving Others
Read the twelfth article of faith. Discuss what it means to be a good citizen and how your actions can affect others.
At Our Activity:
We visited a fire station and learned about fire safety, how the fire fighters work, and how and when to responsibly use the emergency services.  After the presentation in the fire station we discussed the items above, including the 12th article of faith.
While we were there we heard a call come in for an ambulance and watched the EMT personnel respond to the call.

At Home:
Discuss how you can be safe at home.  Prepare an emergency plan in case of fire or other possible emergency.  Discuss any special health or safety concerns in your home (allergies, health problems, evacuating through a 2nd floor window, etc.)
